International industrial group Georg Fischer (GF) will build a modern machine tool facility in Biel.

GF Machining Solutions, a division of GF, plans to invest over 100 million francs in a new milling plant in Biel/Bienne, in the canton of Berne. As a result of strong customer demand for its high speed milling machines, the current plant in Nidau has reached its capacity limits. According to a media release, the new facility – which is expected to be operational in 2018 – will also include a state-of-the art research & development center and a modern application center.

"This investment underscores the commitment of GF to Switzerland as the R&D and production center for our high-precision machine tools", said Yves Serra, CEO of GF. Among the factors prompting the company’s decision to invest in Biel is the fact that the city was recently selected as one of the Swiss Innovation Park network locations, and that it will soon host the Biel/Bienne campus of the Bern University of Applied Sciences.

The new facility will bring approximately 460 high-qualified jobs to the city of Biel/Bienne, including 110 new ones.
